Spotlight

XYZ in 3D
Another Language Performing Arts Company invites you to XYZ, an upcoming telematic cinema project created by company directors Elizabeth and Jimmy Miklavcic.
XYZ, is a 3D digital poem exploring the social and personal elements of width, height and depth through poetry, music, movement and 3D stereographic media. This new work will investigate concepts such as humanity's width of knowledge and experience, heights of aspiration and its depth of spirit.
The work features four entities that float inside spherical shapes. Each entity discusses, in poetic form, their point-of-view about their existence.
XYZ takes place in the INSCC Visualization Laboratory, at the University of Utah. The VisLab Black Box Theater is where the audience will experience 3D projections throughout the performance. Audience members wear active stereoscopic glasses during the performance to view the 3D projections.

Colored-By-Numbers (Hanelle Miklavcic) in XYZ
Do your feet run in an electric haze of audio waves? I float on the crests and am pushed to the human shore by something someone else created on the other side of the world.

Ghost (Lexie Levitt) in XYZ
And we waltz together in an XYZ of some kind of reality. Some kind of connection. I reach out for you. Are you ready to hold my hand? The choice is yours.

Rose (Elizabeth Miklavcic) in XYZ
I watch you go and then I leave. Forever changed by our encounter. I'm not supposed to be here, in two places at once. A digital clone. Here and there. In X,Y, and Z space.

Marooned (Jimmy Miklavcic) in XYZ
The transient dream of a seeker. A traveler in other people's mind-made associations. Where two-plus-two can equal anything and there are no wrong answers. No right answers. Just questions and experiences.
Four entities Colored-By-Numbers, Ghost, Marooned and Rose exist because of technology. They know the benefits of technology, but are cautious of living technologically dependent lives. There is even the suggestion that these entities have become trapped in their own technological bubbles.

The travelers communicate using abstract prose, Colored-By-Numbers is an open book so-to-speak and has only partly experienced some barriers to life, as a result she is only partly written on. Ghost is transparent, she wants to communicate and wants someone to hear what she has to say, but hasn't found anyone to listen. Marooned revels in freedom. He represents digital data, and is able to travel when and where he chooses. Rose rises to visibility, she doubts perception, knowing everyone sees through their own rose colored glasses.

The Center for High Performance Computing Visualization Lab (a.k.a. VisLab Black Box Theater) is located in INSCC RM 294. The VisLab has a single Acer H5360 HD/3D DLP projector and a single display system. The new system is an active 3D system powered by a single Nvidia Quadro 5000 graphics card and a single PC running Windows 7 with 24 GB of RAM. The lab can seat 20 viewers comfortably and is consistent with the number of GeForce 3D Vision active shutter glasses that are available. The active glasses communicate, via an infrared signal, with a small transceiver located on the ceiling just in front of the display screen and connected to the Nvidia graphics card. The graphics card sends a signal to the glasses to shut the left eye when it displays the right eye image, and then the right eye when the left eye image is displayed. This occurs sixty times each second, creating the perceived 3D imagery.

"Another Language Performing Arts Company thanks the voters of Salt Lake County for their support of the Zoo, Arts & Parks program. One-tenth of one percent of the Salt Lake County sales tax goes to support local cultural, botanical, and zoological organizations. This funding has not only stabilized many of Salt Lake's cultural organizations, but has also funded the construction of new recreational facilities, and improved walking trails. ZAP funding helps to provide "free" days, free concerts, reduced ticket prices for students, and provide in-school programs for children in grades kindergarten through twelfth grade."
